The Smooth Fitness Agile DMT X2 takes Elliptical design to a new level, literally. The 14 inch stride is easy on the joints, following the natural path of the foot, extension of the leg, and the rotation of the hip during walking or running. The foot pedals can be moved in a forward or reverse direction.

Sole E25 Elliptical Trainer (2009 Model) | Best Home Elliptical Under $1,000

This is our third look at Sole Elliptical Trainers. The previously reviewed E95 is considered by many as the overall Best Buy Elliptical for 2009. The E25 is at the bottom end of the spectrum of the four Sole models (E25, E35, E55, E95), but is still a quality piece of equipment priced in the middle range of home elliptical trainers.

There are three primary differences between the E25 and the higher end Sole models. The E25 does not include heart rate control (pulse readout only); the display is standard LCD rather vibrant LED; and the footprint is smaller, 71″ x 27″ compared to 82″ x 33″ on the high-end E95. Although this is the most compact model, the stride length is a generous 20 inches, the same as all Sole Ellipticals.

The Sole E25 is sturdily constructed and features a 23 pound flywheel for smooth action and stability. There are four real wheels that ride on heavy duty rails to provide a more secure feel and reduced side to side foot pedal motion, a feature usually found only on more expensive models. This 2009 version adds a manual incline mechanism to vary intensity.

There are sixteen resistance levels and seven user programs to help break up the monotony. All Sole models feature unique over-sized and adjustable foot pedals. User capacity on the E25 is 325 pounds.

Sole offers a strong package of warranties: lifetime on the frame, three years on all parts and electronics, and one year on labor.

In addition to Elliptical Trainers Sole produces a line of high quality treadmills used for “in room fitness” by hotels nationwide.

Purchasing an elliptical trainer, treadmill or exercise bike in the under $500 price range can be risky, and often leads to disappointment. We always recommend considering your specific needs and doing enough research to know exactly what you’re getting and what to expect over time.

The Eclipse 1100 HR/A features a uncommonly small footprint and patented orbital linkage system, producting a smooth and natural elliptical rotation.

The stride length is relatively short, making it best suited for small to medium sized users. The motion produces almost no impact on the knees, back, and hips and the workout is appropriate for all ages and fitness levels.

Despite the size, this elliptical is solidly built and has enough mass to ensure a stable workout. Assembly is easy and the machine includes wheels for convenient transport.

The computer panel tracks time, speed, distance, and approximate calories burned. There are 10 preset workout programs, two heart rate control programs and built-in hand pulse sensors for immediate heart rate monitoring.

Other details include a magnetic resistance system, over-sized, slip-resistant foot pedals for stability and comfort, a water bottle holder and reading rack.

We would not expect this piece of equipment to be a long-term solution, lasting 5 or 10 years. Lower priced options can require more frequent service or replacement of broken parts. Thankfully, in this case, Fitness Quest has built a reputation for excellent customer service.

Proform 330 Elliptical Trainer | Budget Cardio, Lower and Upper Body Workout

Here’s another affordable option from Proform that includes just enough features to make it inviting but is questionable in terms of performance and durability.

The Proform 330 Elliptical is primarily constructed of plastic, as opposed to the durable metal frames seen on higher end models. This negatively affects stability and product life but does improve assembly ease and portability. It’s relatively light and easy to move from room to room.

The 300 does offer a good selection of options including 12 resistance levels, 8 preset programs, and a simple LCD display display panel. The 18 inch stride length allows for a full range of motion and over-sized foot pedals provide extra comfort and stability. The fan is nicely positioned in the middle of the console just above the LCD readout.

The Proform 330 runs on the widely used Silent Magnetic Resistance system, although operation is far from “silent”, and an Eddy Current Brake system.

Two heart rate programs automatically adjust resistance levels to help maintain your optimal training zone during a workout. Heart rate is monitored using a built in EKG pulse rate sensor.

As with most ellipticals in any price range, an upper body workout is provided by rotating handle bars. The handles on this model feel slapped on, are somewhat flimsy and may occasionally come come loose, requiring repeated tightening.

This is a bare bones elliptical for those looking for the basics in a home cardio machine. ProForm can’t compete with the gym quality brands but it’s a solid manufacturer and at $300 the 330 Elliptical is a decent value. For a higher end ProForm model that sets out to accomplishes the same goals, but does it better, read about the ProForm 850 SpaceSaver Elliptical.

Although priced at the low end of the Precor spectrum, this is an expensive piece equipment. It should be considered by those ready to make a true investment in a brand with a reputation as one of the best elliptical manufacturers.

We’ve talked extensively about the benefits of elliptical trainers over treadmills and exercise bikes — fluid, low-impact cardiovascular exercise that yields significantly more lower-body activity and results. The Precor models take these benefits to another level.

The EFX 5.71i’s 19″ stride length delivers an extremely comfortable and natural motion with virtually none of the wobbly, unstable feelings you may encounter with lower end elliptical trainers.

The 5.17i CrossRamp angle adjusts from 12 to 25 degrees, varying elliptical path incline and allowing you to isolate specific lower body muscles: glutes, quads, hamstrings, and calves, or work all major lower body muscle groups at once.

The sophisticated LED display includes keystroke sequencing and multiple feedback options with accompanying graphics. There are 4 programs: weight loss, heart rate, gluteal and manual, and 20 resistance levels to help keep your workouts challenging and diverse.

The primary downside to the EFX 5.17i is the lack of moving handlebars to incorporate an upper body workout. Instead, it’s outfitted with stationary ergonomically correct extended handrails that are appropriate for users of a wide range of heights.

This elliptical trainer gets a mixed review but may be an option for those without a lot of money or space. This entry-level, simple, moderately effective machine is priced at under $100.

The Confidence Elliptical is lightweight, compact and features adjustable resistance, forward and reverse striding and handlebars that secure in place for a “free running” workout. It has built in wheels for easy transport and storage.

This is definitely not the choice for tall or heavy users. Even those of average build may find this trainer a bit unstable and wobbly during use. The dimensions are 34″ x 24″ x 60″ and the unit weighs just 60 lbs.

This model is noisier than most ellipticals and your feet tend to slide forward in the foot rests during a workout, which may affect balance, depending on your size.

For all of its flaws this elliptical does provide the intended cardiovascular workout, simulating walking or jogging with very little stress on the ankles, knees, hips and back. The handlebars move in conjunction with leg motion resulting in a smooth, fluid movement that tones the upper body as well.
