The original Schwinn Airdyne has been around for over 20 years and remains a top seller among upright exercise bikes. The next generation Airdyne Evolution Comp stays true to the original concept but incorporates a more efficient design.
The fan wheel is smaller and uses wider contoured blades for increased resistance, while the operation is much quieter and smoother with less vibration. It’s built with newer technology and higher quality components for an increased life span. It’s a leap forward from the original Schwinn Airdyne.
In both Airdyne models resistance is generated manually rather than electronically. The wind resistance is exponential — the harder you pedal, the higher the resistance and energy expenditure. This naturally provides an optimal workout level to match the user’s fitness level.
Sometimes simplicity is an asset. The Airdyne’s frictionless braking system requires less maintenance than more complex systems and the sealed cartridge bearings provide a smooth ride throughout the bike’s extraordinarily long life.
The Dual action design includes moving exercise arms for an added upper body workout, unlike most upright and recumbent bikes. The computer consolule displays the standard metrics — time, distance, workload level, calories burned, calories/hour, heart rate, and RPM.
The Airdyne Evolutions is somewhat challenging to put together and the quality of the instruction book leaves something to be desired. But assembly won’t take up a good portion of your day like many treadmills, ellipticals and home gyms.
This may not be the preffered bike for professional athletes or competitive cyclists, but without question it’s an excellent and proven choice for home exercise.
