Spinning classes are great for a vigorous workout but sometimes it’s difficult to find time to get to the gym. The Sunny Health & Fitness Pro Indoor Cycling Bike lets you spin at home without a huge investment. When compared to bikes in the $1000+ range, nothing about it feels cheap, other than the price.

This entry level spinning bike is solidly built, comfortable and stable. Key features include a fully adjustable seat, fully adjustable handlebars, 40 lb flywheel, adjustable resistance and a chain drive mechanism for smooth and quiet workouts.

The bike ships almost fully assembled. You just need to unpack and attach the front and rear bases, pedals, handlebar, and seat. All required tools are included. The flywheel and brake system (the bike uses cantilevers and pads with dense fabric) are already attached.

Compared to other spin bikes in the same category, the Sunny has among the heaviest flywheel. There’s a wide range of tension to play with, to the point where you can’t move the flywheel.

With a spin bike, once you get the flywheel turning you can’t coast or pedal backwards like a regular bike. Extreme cyclists prefer this because it improves their cadence. There is a convenient handbrake if you need to stop the flywheel quickly.

Like most spin bikes, this model does not include a monitor or any electronics. Also, the seat is not as comfortable as that of traditional upright exercise bikes. It’s narrow and relatively hard to stay on for long periods. You might want to upgrade to a slip-on gel bike seat if planing to use the bike for extended workouts.

The XRB100 is a minimalist bargain bike with a nice folding feature for those with limited space. Although not suited for serious cardio training, for the price, this bike provides a solid workout.

The construction is solid and sturdy and the push-pull arm design engages the upper body to a limited extent, a feature not usually seen on upright bikes.

We gave a positive review to the Diamondback Fitness 900Sr Step-Thru Recumbent Exercise Bike and wanted to see what their lower-end recumbent has to offer. Priced at about about $150 less than the 900Sr, the 500Sr is an entry-level option, but falls near the top range of that category.

In general, recumbent exercise bikes are easier on the back and neck than upright bikes. As with the 900Sr model, the 500Sr puts additional emphasis on stability and comfort with an extra wide seat and molded backrest.

The 500Sr offers a stable, if not silky smooth, ride using the popular eddy current resistance system. There are 16 available levels of resistance for flexibility and to suit varied fitness levels.

The console includes all the basics — time, pulse, calories burned, RPM, speed and distance. The workout programs are bland but do include a relatively unique custom trainer option that allows you to create new challenges and stay motivated when other programs have become routine or boring. Heart rate is monitored through pulse sensors in the hand grips.

Unlike some models in this price range the 500Sr is outfitted with built-in speakers compatible with iPods and MP3 players. It also includes an accessory holder and a sub-par fan. Weight capacity is 275 pounds and the bike weighs 119 pounds.

The Diamondback Fitness 500Sr cannot emulate the experience of riding a high-end bike at the gym, but it’s an affordable home option from a trusted manufacturer.
