The original Iron Gym Total Upper Body Workout Bar has become one of the best-selling home fitness accessories over the past few years. This upgraded Extreme Edition adds two additional grip positions — alternate wide and side grips — for a total of five.

Like the original Iron Gym, the Extreme Edition installs easily in most doorway frames without the need for screws, fasteners or tools of any kind. The sturdy steel frame mounts and removes quickly without wall or door damage that may be caused by permanent installation pull up bars. The black foam may leave a slight mark on white door frames, however.

This versatile piece of equipment lets you build and tone the chest, back, biceps, triceps, shoulders and abs. When placed on the floor you can perform deep pushups, tricep dips or sit-ups using the Iron Gym for foot stability.

One minor concern with doorway pull up bars of any kind is the need for tall users (6′ 2″ or taller) to bend at the knees to keep their feet from dragging on the ground.

Like the original, the Iron Gym Extreme Edition supports up to 300 pounds and is designed to fit residential doorways between 24 to 32 inches, with trim or molding up to 3.5 inches wide.

Here’s a new entry in the resistance band market looking to take advantage of the phenomenal popularity of the P90X and INSANITY with Shaun T workout programs.

This set from Black Mountain Products includes five 48 inch resistance bands — 1 Yellow band (2-4 Lbs), 1 Green band (4-6 Lbs), 1 Blue Band (10-12 Lbs), 1 Black Band (15-20 Lbs) and 1 Red Band (25-30 Lbs).

The bands are inexplicably not labeled or numbered, but it’s easy to know which band offers the most resistance based on thickness. The package also comes with a door anchor.

A set of bands of varied strength lets you to combine two or more together to increase resistance. Unlike more expensive sets, each band in this package has a permanently attached handle. This avoids the need to add and remove bands from a single handle but makes it more difficult to hold multiple handles during an exercise. It also adds extra bulk to the package. As opposed to the wildly popular screw-less doorway chin up bars, this device mounts in a more traditional fashion by anchoring into wooden joists, the horizontal beams that support floors. This creates a “permanent” workout solution that’s sturdy and safe. The bar can be installed in any room but is ideal for an out the way corner in a garage, workroom or basement.

Tony Horton’s 10 Minute Trainer Workout DVDs & Resistance Band | Super Stacking P90X Alternative

Best known for his P90X system that has exploded online and through infomercials, Tony Horton has gained a massive following for his popular library of fitness programs. We like P90X (see our review here) but have heard numerous comments about how advanced and DIFFICULT it is for some.

The 10 Minute Trainer, sold through Beachbody, is a good choice for those looking for a less rigorous program. But don’t expect to breeze through these DVD workouts. They are challenging.

The system is relatively straight forward and easy to pick up, but be prepared to move fast. Part of the success is the quick transitions that keep you hustling to be ready for the next position. Like any fitness routine you should expect to work hard to produce results, especially during such a short workout period. Although the segments are only 10 minutes we recommend doing the 2 minute warm up and cool down which will extend your workout session to 14 minutes.

A contributing factor to Tony Horton’s success is his ability to impart a feeling that your own personal trainer is guiding and motivating you step by step. These DVDs allow you to increase or decrease the intensity based on your fitness level or vary the number of workouts each day. When you don’t have time to go to the gym or commit to P90X these DVDs are a great alternative.

The 10 Minute Trainer Workouts:

Total Body – 10 moves in 10 minutes that work all muscle groups from head to toe
Cardio – Nothing complicated, just simple kicking, lunging, and punching moves get you in the fat-burning zone fast
